Large sizes dominate rear-projection TV sales in May, Pacific Media Associates says

Unit sales for rear-projection televisions in North America fell again in May, down 12 percent against April sales, according to Pacific Media Associates.

The “May 2007 RPTV Sell-Through Tracking Service” report from Pacific Media Associates showed that unit sales are up 6 percent compared with May 2006, but that revenues are down 21 percent between the two periods.

In terms of units, 75 percent of the models sold were 55in or larger, according to Rosemary Abowd, VP with Pacific Media. Consumers continue to prefer flat-panel HDTVs, and falling LCD and plasma prices have eliminated rear projection’s price advantage in smaller sizes, she said.

Sony topped the list of RPTV vendors for the month with a unit market share approaching 30 percent and a 34 percent revenue market share. Strong sales of the XBR2 and A2020 Series SXRD models helped the company gain the top spot. Samsung was second and Mitsubishi third in both unit and revenue shares. The best-selling model was the Toshiba 65HM167, with an average street price of $1624.
