KT Launches H.264 MegaTV FTTH Service

KT Corp. has launched its new MegaTV fibre-to-the-home service, which offers converged voice, data and IPTV service to homes across the Republic of Korea.

The service will offer more than 2,000 hours of content each month, and will provide tens of thousands of on-demand titles and 28 interactive services, ranging from education to finance to instant messaging. An electronic program guide and user-created content are also available. Other KT Mega TV features include digital photos and personalized stock quotes, as well as up-to-date weather and sports information.

The service will be encoded and processed with ATEME file-encoding software. KT has purchased a significant number of ATEME H.264 File Encoder licenses and will use ATEME technology exclusively to process all of the movies available on MegaTV.

"We are very happy to select ATEME technology for our new Mega TV service", said Young-Hyun Kim, assistant vice president of KT's Media BU. "Through this license contract, KT will be able to supply the best-quality video to every home and lead in IPTV as well as the VoD market. This is a wonderful opportunity for KT to take a worldwide leadership role in converged services among telecommunication companies".

"We are very excited to be the exclusive provider of H.264 encoding solutions to Korea Telecom's new IPTV service", said Sylvain Riviere, vice president of marketing for ATEME's Broadcast and Broadband group. "The Republic of Korea has the best access network of high-speed broadband of any country on Earth, and Korea Telecom will be taking advantage of that network capacity to deploy a remarkable suite of IPTV services to their subscribers".
