JVC unveils consumer HD camcorder

The GR-HD1 uses MPEG-2 compression, records and plays back digital high-definition images while maintaining conventional 525i DV standard recording times.

JVC has announced the GR-HD1 high-definition digital video camera, claimed to be the first consumer HDTV digital video camcorder in the world. It will be available in March in Japan and in the United States later this year.

By utilizing a newly developed one-third inch-type 1.18 million pixel progressive scan CCD and proprietary processing, JVC said the new camera records and plays back 750/30p (1280x720/30p viewable) digital high-definition and 525p progressive wide images to mini DV tape.

The camera system uses MPEG-2 compression, records and plays back digital high-definition images while maintaining conventional 525i DV standard recording times.

The GR-HD1 comes with an optical 10X zoom lens and built-in optical image stabilizer. It has three recording modes, HD, SD and DV. It records 750/30p digital high-definition images, SD records 525p progressive widescreen images, and DV records conventional 525i standard definition images.

Down- and upconverter functions make the camcorder adaptable to any monitor. Upconverter functions translate 750/30p digital high-definition images and 525p progressive wide images to the 1125i high-definition standard; downconverter functions translate images to the conventional 525i broadcast standard, enabling images to be viewed on any monitor.

JVC also announced its "MPEG Edit Studio Pro 1.0 LE," a professional, nonlinear MPEG-2 editing package that has been customized for the GR-HD1 camcorder. It provides frame accurate HD editing capabilities. The software has additional functions to convert files to MPEG-2 - PS (program stream) format that can be used by ImageMixer DVD for production of original DVDs.

JVC said the editing software is compatible with Microsoft's Windows, but not with Apple's Macintosh platform.
