FCC Requests Comments on State of Media Marketplace

The FCC has released 12 white papers examining the current state of the media marketplace, including how consumers use the media, how advertisers view the different media outlets and how media ownership affects diversity, localism and competition. The studies come on the heel of the commission's September decision to re-examine media ownership rules.

The analyses -- done by FCC officials and outside experts -- were prompted by chairman Powell's formation of the Media Ownership Working Group last November. Comments on the studies are due to the commission by Dec. 12, 2002 and reply comments are due Jan. 2, 2003.

The comments can be downloaded from the FCC's Web site at www.fcc.gov/ownership.
