Europe: HD Comes to Belgian and German Cable TV

Flemish cable operator Interkabel will introduce its first HD services on the iN-Di digital service, which will include an HD version of programming from VTM, a commercial broadcaster operating in the Flemish-speaking sector of Belgium. The introduction of HD on Interkabel will mark the first such content available via cable in Belgium.

In addition to VTM, the HD package will include a mix of original programming consisting mostly of Flemish-speaking news and TV series shot in HD, along with content upscaled from SD programming. Other channels include HD1, Exqui (Flemish culture) and National Geographic HD from the United States, according to Broadband TV News.

In Germany, Unity Media unveiled plans this week to launch its package of "Premiere HD' channels by late spring. The German package offers HD versions of sports and movies outlets, along with Discovery HD. (German operators KDG and Kabel BW already offer Premiere HD.) There are now at least eight cable-only HD channels available in Germany.
