DVD sales set new record in 2002

Sony's progressive scan DVD player, the DVP-NS715P, was a big seller for the company in 2002.

The CEA reports that manufacturer-to-dealer sales of DVD players continued to set record-breaking figures with some 17.1 million units sold in 2002 — the most units ever since its introduction to the market in 1997.

Other digital video products, such as digital TV sets and camcorders, also demonstrated solid growth during the 2002 calendar year, the CEA said.

Factory-to-dealer sales of digital television (DTV) products totaled 2,487,502 units and $4,210,151,531. The 2002 sales surpassed the 2001 total by 73 percent in units and 61 percent in dollars. The CEA defines DTV products as integrated sets and monitors displaying active vertical scanning lines of at least 480p and, in the case of integrated sets, receiving and decoding ATSC terrestrial digital transmissions.

Last December, factory-to-dealer sales of camcorders increased some 32 percent over 2001 figures to 599,951 units. Sales of DVD players also continued to rise with more than 2.3 million units shipped to dealers for the month — a one-quarter increase, compared to the same period in 2001.
