DIRECTV expands compression platform with Grass Valley ViBE
DIRECTV, one of the largest satellite TV service providers in North America, has significantly expanded the capabilities of its broadcast facility by deploying numerous pieces of Grass Valley MPEG-2 compression equipment. The new compression equipment is now being installed within the provider’s Los Angeles broadcast center.
Placing an order valued at nearly $8 million, DIRECTV is hoping to add new SD and HD channels to its program lineup by efficiently managing its transponder capacity with Grass Valley ViBE encoders, decoders, multiplexers and related compression equipment and systems. The provider installed its first Grass Valley ViBE platform in 2003 to expand its local-into-local service.
The new purchase order includes 370 ViBE dual-pass encoders (14+2 encoders on each of the 22 transponders, plus 18 spares for complete redundancy), 370 ViBE encoder audio boards, 18 multiplexers, 28 Netprocessors and on-site training and related peripheral equipment.
