Comcast Cable offers local broadcast channels

To take advantage of the NBA playoffs, Philadelphia, Pa.-based Comcast Cable last week began carrying the high-definition television (HDTV) signals of KNBC-TV, KABC-TV, KCET (PBS), as well as the standard definition programming from Fox affiliate KTTV. Absent from the group is CBS affiliate KCBS-TV, which was unable to reach a carriage agreement with Comcast, the country's largest cable and broadband communications provider.

Comcast Cable's Western Division, located in San Ramon, Calif., serves approximately three million cable customers in the Central Valley, San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles regions of California.

Comcast customers who have an HD-ready television set will now be able to rent a digital set-top converter and HD tuner, which allows them to view broadcasters’ over-the-air HD channels. The Comcast HDTV package includes the rental of an HDTV decoder for $5 per month. As part of the premium charge, digital cable subscribers also have access to HBO and Showtime HD channels.
