BBC Technology hosts UK stats

BBC Technology, a provider of products and services to media organizations, has announced that it is hosting the Office for National Statistics (ONS) online portal for official statistics on the UK’s economy, population and society.

ONS provides a wide range of commercial and publicly available data including economic metrics such as the Retail Price Index; population statistics such as the 2001 Census; and data on society, the environment and the labor market. It publishes secure, time-sensitive data that the UK government uses to make key planning decisions, as well as provides a range of subscription services to UK businesses in diverse industry sectors, including manufacturing, banking and financial services. The site also delivers a wide range of data and other information free to the public.

BBC Technology’s Internet Solutions division provided the systems design, integration and optimization for hosting the National Statistics Online services, and currently manages 30 servers for the service at its Maidenhead, England data center, including those that power ONS‚ transactional commercial network, public Web site and internal sites.

A key requirement for ONS was a hosting solution that could provide the highest level of reliability and the ability to cope with rapid surges in usage. “Being used for managing traffic and extreme audience peaks, our specialists in rich media Internet services are able to match the levels of reliability and scalability that National Statistics Online require,” said Phil Fearnley, commercial director of BBC Technology.
