BBC Taps Drake For Intercoms

Broadcast intercom supplier Drake Electronics has inked a deal with the BBC to supply a site-wide FreeSpeak installation at Television Centre in London. The digital wireless intercom system will cover all corridors, such as production areas, green rooms, make-up and the Blue Peter garden, enabling the BBC production staff to operate freely around the complex while remaining in constant communication.

FreeSpeak will sit on a separate Drake system with a capacity of 1024 ports. The connection between FreeSpeak and the studio will be via a combination of Drake 'Hi-Que' links and intelligent trunks circuits across CAT5 and fibre connectivity. The inclusion of FreeSpeak in the Drake system, which operates using a honeycomb of 300 cells, enables communication across the Hi-Que paths to other matrices and studio clusters.
