Asia/Pacific region faces challenges in HD deployment

The number of broadcasters transmitting commercial HD television in the majority of Asia/Pacific markets remains limited despite a growing number of flat-panel HDTVs hitting the market, according to researcher In-Stat.

HDTV service subscribers in the Asia/Pacific region are expected to reach 39 million in 2011, expanding from about 8 million in mid-2006, the high-tech market research firm says. The research firm recently published “In-Depth Analysis: Asia/Pacific HDTV Market Sets Off in 2006,” in which it forecasts HDTV set shipments, revenue and subscribers through 2011.

A lack of sufficient bandwidth is holding back the HDTV deployment in the region, according to In-Stat analyst Bryan Wang.

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

  • The Asia/Pacific HDTV display market amounted to 4.1 million in total unit shipments in 2005.
  • India will represent the major increasing uptake in absolute quantity for HDTV displays from 2008 to 2011.
