Architects Sign On for New Trade Center Design in NYC

Katia Hunter, a staff reporter at nyNewsday.com reported Larry Siliverstein has picked three architects for the World Trade Center Site. Silverstein leased the World Trade Center Site from the Port Authority before 9/11 and is developing the 1,776-foot tall Freedom Tower and surrounding buildings to replace the twin towers. NYC TV broadcasters are planning to move back to the World Trade Center site once it is completed.

One of the architects, Fumihiko Maki, designed the TV Asahi Broadcast Headquarters in Tokyo. Lord Norman Foster, who submitted a design in the competition for the WTC site rebuilding, will join Maki and French architect Jean Nouvel in the design of the five office buildings at Ground Zero. All three will work with Siliverstein's architect David Childs. Childs is a member of the New York based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The master planner for the World Trade Center site is Daniel Libeskind.

The article, Silverstein Picks 3 Architects For WTC Site, said it wasn't yet clear who will design which building. Silverstein was quoted saying, "This is a group of world-class architects -- they're the best in the world, and in our judgment, the only architects to choose to execute the brilliant master plan done by Daniel Libeskind. This is truly a unique opportunity to conceive and to create the best that architecture can devise for the new World Trade Center."

More information on the designs and the architects are available at the nyNewsday.com article and architect site links above. Silverstein Properties also has a web page devoted to the World Trade Center project with impressive images of the site plan and design.
