70 million U.S. households have access to HDTV on cable

Cable viewers in the top 30 Designated Market Areas (DMAs) and 96 of the top 100 DMAs have access to an HDTV package from at least one cable system operator, according to a new survey from the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA).

Additionally 70 million U.S. households are now passed by systems offering HDTV – up from 37 million households when HDTV was initially made available on cable.

Beyond the top 100 DMAs, 47 markets have at least one cable system offering viewers HDTV service, making the total number of DMAs with HDTV cable service 143 out of 210 nationwide.

The number of digital broadcast stations being carried by cable operators has risen to 304 from 231 on Sept. 1 and 190 on June 1, the association said.
