Vitesse PHY solutions advance synchronous Ethernet

Vitesse Semiconductor has announced the availability of 10GigE and 1GigE PHY solutions that support reliable, synchronous data transfer over IP packet-based networks.

The Synchronous Ethernet PHYs integrated circuits enable system vendors to develop network equipment that can deliver voice, video and data services over a single, converged Ethernet link by implementing synchronization in accordance with ITU-T Recommendation G.8261/Y.1361. The VSC8486 10GE LAN/WAN transceiver and the VSC8211 single 10/100/1000BASE-T PHYs both support this developing standard, supporting the adoption of Ethernet deep into the traditional Wide Area Network (WAN).

The new VSC8486 10GE WAN/LAN solution is a low-power SerDes with XFI, XGMII and XAUI interfaces. It uses the Ethernet physical layer to provide reference timing signal distribution over packet networks. This reference timing signal, with proper phase stability and frequency accuracy characteristics, allows operators to migrate to a next-generation packet architecture, supporting time-sensitive applications that include cellular, circuit emulation services, streaming video and VoIP.

This critical clock feature for Synchronous Ethernet applications is also available on various Vitesse copper 1GigE PHYs. For example, the VSC8211 single-port 10/100/1000BASE-T and 1000BASE-X PHY provides an IEEE 802.3 jitter-compliant 125MHz recovered clock output on a dedicated pin.

The 10GigE and 1GigE devices from Vitesse are available today. The 10GigE LAN/WAN PHY (VSC8486) is in sampling and the copper 1GigE PHY (VSC8211) is in full production.
