Virage unveils automatic copyright infringement protection

Autonomy, a specialist in meaning-based computing, last week released new software within its Virage product line that it claims will automatically detect copyright protected video.

The Virage Automatic Copyright Infringement Detection (ACID) tool enables copyright owners such as broadcasters, production houses and publishers to maintain control of their protected content by automating the detection of illegal distribution on the Internet.

Autonomy said the tool used its image and audio analysis technology while leveraging the company’s Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL). Unlike many digital rights management systems, ACID does not rely on watermarking and is not undermined by random noise or format and codec changes.

It also works with different types of data. Being independent of media format, the company said ACID can not only detect whether distributed video infringes copyright, but also whether audio content ripped from a copyrighted video or audio track that is overlaid on legitimate video has been uploaded.
