DasherCam lets fans follow the puck along the near boards on the camera side at all times.
ESPN and ESPN2 is using “DasherCam” during its coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship’s Frozen Four from Columbus, OH.
DasherCam, a robotic camera running the length of the ice above the protective glass attached to the dasher boards, provides viewers with an unobstructed ice-level view of the action. Coverage of the championships began last night and concludes April 9.
The camera captures the speed of the players as they accelerate through the neutral zone, providing viewers an enhanced feel for the quickness of the game and a better perspective on how plays develop. In addition, the use of DasherCam lets fans follow the puck along the near boards on the camera side at all times.
The DasherCam, mounted on a dolly moving along a rail system positioned directly above the near glass boards between the faceoff circles, is about six inches long, three inches tall and three inches wide. ESPN worked with Chicago-based Fletcher, which is providing the system, to bring this innovation to the Frozen Four for the first time. The Frozen Four is being presented in high definition on ESPN2 HD (both semifinal games) and ESPN HD (the championship).
