Unity Audio unveils The Rock

Unity Audio, a UK pro audio distributor, has released its own monitor loudspeaker, The Rock. The firm assembled a team of professionals with the goal of creating a “brutally honest tool on which you can base the most critical decisions without a second guess or hesitation.” The Rock is self-powered, featuring a 180mm (roughly 7in) woofer and folded ribbon tweeter in a nine-ply Baltic birch cabinet.

Studio designer Kevin Van Green created the transducer/baffle system and cabinet, which sports a Corian front baffle and is uniquely braced for rigidity. The folded ribbon tweeter uses a neodymium magnet system, while the woofer incorporates aluminum foil bonded to the cone to reduce harmonic anomalies while permitting 15mm excursion and ensuring continued cone symmetry. The onboard amplifier was custom-designed for The Rock by Tim De Paravicini of Esoteric Audio Research, who specified a 100W discrete bipolar design with custom transformers and dedicated low- and high-frequency sections for fast, clean, accurate reproduction.
