Enco Launches New Closed Captioning System

Enco Systems will debut enCaption, its real time, automated, speaker independent speech recognition-based closed captioning system at NAB 2004.

According to Enco president Eugene Novacek, P.E., advances in neural networks and processors enabled the company to develop enCaption, which allows broadcasters to caption breaking news or emergency messages at any time. Additionally, enCaption can be used on regularly scheduled news programming.

"The speaker independent nature means you don't have to 'train' it to the voices on your station. The neural network part means that enCaption learns place names and locations, essentially customizing itself to the station's service area," said Don Backus, vice president of sales and marketing.
