Wave Buys Four Flagship DK-Technologies Meters For Its London And Amsterdam Studios

DK-Technologies has supplied four of its flagship MSD600M++ audio meters to award-winning sound design studio Wave so that the facility can tackle the issue of the perceived loudness of audio signals and monitor audio in mono, stereo and 5.1.

All four meters are loaded with DK-Technologies’ latest software, which includes JellyFish™ and StarFish™ display technology and the company’s new loudness measuring methods that provide additions to the LEQ (m) and Flat Filtering methods available in earlier software versions. With this upgrade, engineers can now measure loudness according to the recently proposed ITU recommendations, as well as to the widely used LEQ(a) used with Dialnorm for measuring dialogue.

Wave is about to open a new office in Amsterdam, which will have three studios equipped with Euphonix MCS consoles and Nuendo digital audio workstations. Designed to service Dutch, pan-European and UK markets, Wave Amsterdam clients will receive Wave’s usual high standard of service and creativity, but will benefit from a reduced ratecard thanks the facility’s lower overheads.

Wave’s technical director Oscar Kugblenu says: “Three of the new DK meters will be installed in Amsterdam, while the fourth is being installed in the Dolby 5.1 suite in London, better known as Studio 3 We chose the MSD600M++ because it offers a solution to the loudness issue, which is currently a hot topic for the broadcast and post production industries in the UK, and it provides us with dual facilities for monitoring and referencing to both the traditional BBC PPM scale and the new loudness metering scales. It also allows us the added facility of being able to monitor in both stereo and 5.1, which is an important consideration because an increasing amount of the work we now do is in 5.1 surround.”

DK-Technologies’ MSD600M++ Audio Meter is a modular, multi-channel audio analyser accepting up to 32 input channels. The MSD600M++ has 4 configurable input slots and 4 output slots. Available modules include Analogue, AES3 and SD-SDI formats.

The unit incorporates DK’s new StarFish™ display that literally allows users to see what they are hearing when they are listening in surround sound. Based on the company’s unique and hugely popular JellyFish™ display, StarFish™ represents a massive leap forward for all those who work in the 5.1 domain by displaying an image of the acoustic audio levels as they are experienced by the listener. This information is given alongside the images already provided by JellyFish™, which shows audio levels supplied to the centre, left/right and left/right rear speakers.
