On a Gizmodo blog post, I found what I want Santa to bring me for Christmas. I want a Panasonic 103in plasma TV set under my tree Christmas morning.
Now, he may have to leave a few of your presents behind in order to squeeze my new, huge TV into his sleigh, but that’ll be all right. After all, it’ll be for a good cause: Me!
The set’s specifications were released more than a year ago, and they are impressive. Full HD resolution, 1020x 1080 pixels. The set handles all HD formats: 480p/720p/1080i and 1080p with 1096 shades of gradation. The display area is 89in wide by 50in high and has a contrast ratio of 4000:1! Can you imagine watching football on this television set! It will be better than being there.
The versatile inputs accommodate D-sub 15 PC connectivity plus a D-sub9RS 232C interface, and you’re fixed for HDMI. If you’d like drive it with something else, it comes with three interchangeable slots supporting a variety of inputs. Standard configuration is a DVI board, which is compatible with UXGA, and an analog component board, which is what you’d expect to see coming from an STB. The plug-in architecture allows for the future addition of multifunction terminal boards for increased connectivity and functionality.
This TV weights just under 500lbs! Woops, I may have to install reinforcing posts from the basement floor up to the theater room flooring. I’d sure hate to see my new TV set fall through the floor or tip over. Base price is $70,000. Hey, you can’t put a price on entertainment, right?
Uh-oh, I just noticed a small note at the end of the specification’s about power. While I understood the TV set draws 1500W, I failed to realize that’s 1500W at 220VAC! Counting turn-on surge, I’ll need a separate 5KW feeder from my breaker box just to power this monster!
Oh well, the entry price of new technology may be high, but so too will be the pleasure.
