KSHB-TV, Kansas City’s NBC affiliate, began broadcasting its local newscasts in 1080i on April 24, thereby securing a slot among the first 100 local stations in the nation to make a similar move. (No one ever seems to know the exact count, to date, but it’s likely somewhere around 90 stations.) Kansas City is the 31st largest DMA in the nation.
The broadcaster said on its Web site that its meteorologists (“NBC Action Weather Plus”) has taken the opportunity of its local HD upgrade to commence a state-of-the-art HD weather system that enables it to provide more accurate forecasts, thanks to more clearly defined maps, radar and graphics presentations.
KSHB HD newscasts air at 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. prior to the “Today” show, midday at 11 a.m., and evenings at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., on weekdays. A typical broadcast day, said the station, including network content from NBC Universal, now consists of 15 HD hours daily.
