Dalet wins $1.2 million contract from ABS-CBN

Dalet Digital Media Systems has won a contract from Philippines broadcaster ABS-CBN Broadcast Corporation to supply its Dalet Enterprise Edition for a facility-wide media asset management platform and archiving installation. The deal is worth US $ 1.2 million.

Dalet and business partner Challenge Systems collaborated on the workflow design to deliver a streamlined ingest, scheduling, playout and archive set-up, and will be responsible for overseeing the installation process. The new installation will allow ABS-CBN to preserve and digitise existing media assets while adding new media channels such as web and mobile TV to its offering.

The Dalet supplied system will integrate a range of other technologies from Masstech, IBM, Exanet, Snell & Wilcox, Apple and Avid to create a collaborative media production and distribution environment.

The new installation will migrate existing ABS-CBN material — 21 years worth — from analogue formats into a common DVCPRO 50. Low resolution proxies will be generated and remain online for search and retrieval from any Dalet workstation or via a web browser. Newly created ABS-CBN program material — soap operas, realty TV, magazine programs — will be shot using Panasonic P2 and Sony XDCAM cameras and stored in the Dalet Content Catalogue for seamless integration with production systems from Apple and Avid, playout servers and other multimedia platforms.

The new digital workflow will enable ABS-CBN to distribute programs and content to a wide range of media with much greater ease and efficiency. Older material from the vast archives will be incrementally added to the system; all material will be incorporated in to the system within five years.

"The Dalet system offered us an extensible architecture in which we could modernize our broadcast operation while integrating our existing back office processes and preserving our extensive library of content," comments, Raul Bulaong, Head of Technical Operations Division of ABS-CBN. "The end result is a very innovative media asset management and archiving workflow that allows us to efficiently repackage and redistribute content with optimum flexibility ensuring that the Philippine community can view, engage and interact with ABS-CBN programmes via their favourite channel whether it be television, web, or mobile media devices."
