TANDBERG Television wins InfoVision Award
The International Engineering Consortium last week presented TANDBERG Television with an InfoVision Award during a ceremony at the Broadband World Forum Asia 2006 in Hong Kong.
The TANDBERG High Definition Intelligent Compression Engine (HD-ICE) for MPEG-4 AVC and SMPTE VC-1 won in the “Enabling Silicon and Component-Level Technologies” category.
This technology lets network operators and broadcasters deliver high quality HDTV services thanks to its ability to reduce the amount of bandwidth used by up to 50 percent.

Stanford streams NCAA 2006 Tennis Championships live on Web
Stanford University’s athletics department will use Digital Rapids StreamZ real-time media encoding servers to provide live streaming video coverage of the NCAA 2006 Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships on the Web.
Stanford is hosting the first-ever combined men’s and women’s NCAA Tennis Championships (May 18-29). This event also marks the first time live streaming video has been used to present the NCAA tennis tournament. Stanford’s athletics department is using three dual-channel Digital Rapids StreamZ servers to encode live Windows Media 9 streams from up to six of the 12 tournament courts at the university’s Taube Tennis Center. The streams include scoring data overlays driven by Daktronics.

T-Online Hungary selects Alcatel, Microsoft for IPTV pilot
T-Online Hungary, a group member of Deutsche Telekom and Hungary’s largest Internet access provider, has selected Alcatel and Microsoft TV as the suppliers for an IPTV pilot project, based on the combination of the Microsoft TV IPTV Edition software platform and Alcatel’s services integration solutions. The pilot project is composed of three phases: a technical lab trial, two field trials and a public market trial. The technical lab trial was successfully concluded at the end of January. The first field trial, which included 18 broadcast TV channels, VoD and PVR, was recently evaluated and based on the results, a second extended field trial with 500 users, enhanced quality and more TV channels was launched and is ongoing. The third phase, a public market trial, is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2006.

Irdeto to protect Optical Entertainment Network's IPTV service
Optical Entertainment Network (OEN) has chosen the Irdeto IPTV content security solution to protect its IP-based fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) network video service offering.
The Irdeto IPTV solution will protect content for OEN's FISION service, which will provide triple-play services over IP, consisting of digital video, including HDTV, Internet and voice service to subscribers in greater Houston.

Lucent receives International Engineering Consortium honor
Lucent Technologies last week received a 2006 InfoVision Award from the International Engineering Consortium for the best metro network technology or service of the year.
The award, which recognized the Lucent Multimedia Access Platform, was presented May 17 at the Broadband World Forum 2006 trade show in Hong Kong.
The Lucent Multimedia Access Platform is a next-generation broadband access platform designed to help service providers profitably deliver IPTV and IP multimedia services to the mass market, across copper, fiber and wireless networks, reducing both capital and operational costs.

PCCW, STAR to explore IPTV opportunities in Asia
Hong Kong telecom provider PCCW and STAR, a wholly owned subsidiary of News Corp., will jointly explore IPTV pay-TV opportunities in overseas markets.

Globecomm expands broadcast lab
Globecomm is expanding its broadcast lab test facility for video applications. Established in 2001 to integrate test capabilities for the many technologies involved in the delivery of IPTV, the lab focuses on IPTV delivery networks that also incorporate the use of satellite.
The Broadcast Lab is installing equipment from Omnibase, Entone, Terayon, Myrio and other suppliers.

Alcatel wins FTTH deal in Pakistan
Naya Tel of Pakistan has selected Alcatel to supply the region's first fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solution to deliver a full range of high bandwidth triple play (voice, video and data) services to more than 30,000 subscribers in Islamabad.
Naya Tel is deploying the Alcatel 7340 fiber-to-the-user (FTTU) solution, along with the Alcatel 5020 Softswitch.
