Taiwanese broadcaster TTV launches MediaFLO test

A major Taiwanese TV broadcaster this month announced it would be participating in a technical trial exploring the delivery of TV signals to mobile devices using QUALCOMM's MediaFLO format.

The trial, being performed by Taiwan Television Enterprise (TTV) in collaboration with QUALCOMM and wireless technology and data solutions provider China Network Systems (CNS), will feature up to three live channels of TTV programming and four live channels of CNS content. The companies will be evaluating the performance capabilities of the MediaFLO system in the field, with the potential to adopt the format for mobile television and other multimedia-type services in Taiwan.

Taiwan has a high rate (approximately 84 percent) of pay TV penetration, providing a large potential customer base for services enabled by MediaFLO. In turn, TTV could see new forms of revenue generated if it were to repurpose its content for mobile TV applications using MediaFLO.

The MediaFLO technology was designed to enable the broadcast of video, audio streams and IP datacasting to mobile handsets on a dedicated network. It provides support for transmitting more than 20 streaming channels of QVGA-quality video at up to 30fps, 10 stereo audio channels and multiple short-format video clip downloads per day. It takes about two seconds for users to switch between channels on mobile devices that work with the technology.
