Seagate hybrid hard drive adds flash memory

Seagate Technology has announced that its Momentus5400 PSD hard drive, a 2.5in notebook drive that combines disc storage with flash memory to deliver ultra power efficiency, faster boot-ups and greater reliability for the exploding laptop PC market, is drawing many accolades.

The Seagate hard drive uses non-volatile cache, or flash memory, to cost-effectively deliver benefits similar to that of solid state disc drives but at a much lower price. The 160GB drive places commonly used hard drive data onto 256MB flash memory to accelerate boot-up, reduce power consumption, increase reliability and boost performance of laptop computers.

Such attributes have applications in the broadcast market, with the need for fast starts after power failure, so it remains to be seen how long it is before such technology is seen in professional products.
