Holophone launches H3-D microphone at NAB

Holophone is introducing a new product, the H3-D professional surround sound microphone, at the NAB2006. Essentially a streamlined version of Holophone’s patented H2-PRO system that has been used at events like the Grammy Awards and Super Bowl, this device is designed to make 5.1 surround recording accessible to a broader group of producers by simplifying the entire procedure.

The H3-D features a six-channel discrete microphone designed to automatically capture and deliver 5.1 channels without the need for external mixing or signal manipulation, essentially eliminating the need for multiple-microphone surround set-ups. The microphone has a multi-directional pickup pattern with full range (20-20,000Hz) response on its five perimeter channels, with a discrete low frequency effect (LFE) microphone located inside. The entire setup is phantom powered and sports a handy LED indicator. The H3-D outputs go to a supplied 15ft Monster cable that terminates in a 6-pin Neutrik XLR connector. Optional accessories will include a windscreen and pistol grip.
