FCC extends effective date for new rules covering children’s TV

The FCC will delay the date new rules pertaining to educational requirements and inappropriate commercials for children take effect, the commission announced in mid December.

The rules, which were adopted in September 2004, were due to go into effect Jan. 1. However, a series of petitions filed with the commission from a variety of parties, including Viacom, Disney and the United Church of Christ, to modify the rules were withdrawn and filed in federal court.

Subsequent to those filings, the parties agreed on a recommendation to modify the rules. The FCC currently is reconsidering the recommendation and will give it “serious consideration.”

Therefore, on Dec. 16, the commission ordered an extension for the effective date until 60 days after publication in the Federal Register of the commission’s order on reconsideration.
