Clippz.com, a Web site allowing users to download video clips for free to their mobile phones without having to access a mobile carrier, launched last week. It already features more than 500 video clips, including content from YouTube, Metacafe and MySpace.
Users bypass mobile carriers by "sideloading" optimized video clips from the site to a mobile device. The content is delivered in device-optimized file formats without requiring the intermediation of a mobile network, video conversion or software installation. The technology that powers Clippz.com, Clippz Cascade, is based on an intelligent mobile video encoder than converts a single input video into multiple outputs based on a predefined set of more than 30 device profiles. Even though there is no mobile network required, a particular user’s device must have the data capacity and resolution to support the clips.
Once downloaded, video clips can be sideloaded to a mobile device one of three ways: via wireless connection using Bluetooth; by USB cable connection; or by writing directly to a memory card that can be inserted into the device. Clippz.com delivers content in MP4, 3GP, 3G2 and WMV formats for playback on cell phones, media players and PDAs.
