WPMI-TV Taps Ai for Quantum

Clear Channel Broadcasting, Inc. has selected an Acrodyne Industries (Ai) depressed collector Quantum transmitter for use at WPMI-TV (Channel 15) in Mobile, Ala. According to the Ai news release, WPMI-TV had to relocate its transmission facilities as a result of losing approximately 1200 feet of its tower when Hurricane Ivan struck the area. Ai shipped the transmitter to WPMI-TV immediately after WPMI placed the order, allowing installation less than a month after the storm struck. Ai said its Quantum transmitter, equipped with two e2v ESCIOT water-cooled tubes, will replace an older, lower efficiency, three tube Comark klystron system. Installation is scheduled for completion this month.

Acrodyne's news release said the power usage at WPMI "will be reduced by over $110,000 a year compared to the original klystron transmitter." Nat Ostroff, Chairman and President of Ai, commented, "Once again another leading broadcast organization has chosen the Ai Quantum transmitter line. We at Ai are extremely proud to receive this vote of confidence from Clear Channel. The proven reliability and energy savings of the ESCIOT powered Quantum transmitters continue to set records in energy savings and signal performance as well as customer confidence."
