Tower Worker Falls to Death in Nebraska; Fourth in 14 Months

SpectraSite Broadcast Group tower worker Carlos Munoz fell 1,200 feet off a tower and died in an apparent safety equipment failure on Monday.

Munoz, 22, was the fourth person to die in a tower accident in Nebraska in the last 14 months¾all the accidents have been attributed to work erecting DTV antennas. He was part of a crew working on the KOLN/KGIN tower 30 miles west of Lincoln, Neb. to reinforce it after an HDTV antenna was added last Fall.

Two other workers were on the 1,500-foot tower at the same time. According to the local sheriff, Munoz was attached to the tower with a harness before the fall, but a piece of the harness used to hook to the structure was found bent at an odd angle after the accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident and analyzing the safety equipment.
