Toshiba is betting heavily on the public embracing reception-integrated televisions. The company is sinking $1.8 billion to build a DTV chip plant in Oita, Japan, according to English-language Asian newspapers. The company intends to increase production threefold to 1.5 million chips in fiscal 2004 and double that the following year. Toshiba also intends to produce a new system chip for the European market this year.
