TANDBERG sells compression gear to now Broadband TV

TANDBERG Television announced that now Broadband TV, a service of PCCW and one of Asia’s largest integrated communications companies, has chosen its MPEG-4 compression technology for its rollout of HDTV over DSL.

The pay television service, launched in 2003, has been using MPEG-2 encoding for its premium channels. By employing TANDBERG's EN5990 MPEG-4 AVC encoder, the service will now be able to deliver high-definition sports, entertainment and news content in half the bandwidth that would have been required for the same picture quality with MPEG-2.

The EN5990 combines the MPEG-4 H.264/AVC video compression algorithm with TANDBERG’s Intelligent Compression Engine (HD ICE). The product has new audio coding options that provide low bit-rate audio performance.
