TANDBERG and Telefonica to supply wireless digital newsgathering for Telemadrid

Spain’s Telemadrid has chosen TANDBERG Television and Telefonica to provide an advanced digital electronic news gathering (DENG) system for live local news and event coverage around Madrid.

The system, which will be installed by engineers from Telefonica and TANDBERG, will be based on technologies TANDBERG Television has developed to enable an end-to-end wireless broadcast operation, including live footage being filmed with wireless cameras.

The The system being deployed in Madrid consists of a number of ENG vans, each equipped with TANDBERG Television’s Voyager CT 2011 wireless camera unit. (Pictured)

The footage is then transmitted via fully equipped Digital ENG vans in the field, received either directly at the main studio or at strategic repeater sites using diversity reception for automatic aerial selection and delivered to the main studio/central control center in Madrid using a high-quality 8PSK link.

The system being deployed in Madrid consists of a number of ENG vans, each equipped with TANDBERG Television’s Voyager CT 2011 wireless camera unit. The use of wireless at this content acquisition stage extends the range of camera operation from the actual newsgathering vehicle and also avoids health and safety issues presented by trailing cables across streets. The wireless camera pack transmits footage back to a two-way diversity receiver in the van. The use of diversity improves performance and quality over single-channel receivers.

The vans also will be equipped with TANDBERG Television E5750 4:2:2 encoder with COFDM output and triax control card and a 2.5 GHz outdoor transmit unit designed specifically for high-power COFDM operation.

The ENG vans transmit back to the central receive site at Torre Iberia where a 6-way diversity receiver, E5710 encoders and SM5600 modulator is located.

The system also includes a number of rugged portable repeater setups designed for rapid deployment whenever a wireless camera or ENG van is out of range of the central receive site.
