Survey shows continuing popularity of DVD, growing interest in HD versions

More DVDs will be bought as gifts this Christmas than in 2006, reveals a survey from the Digital Entertainment Group Europe (DEG Europe).

The findings show that DVDs remain the present of choice, with 78 percent of UK consumers questioned planning to purchase one or more DVDs during the holidays, compared to 68 percent in 2006.

The survey revealed two major reasons for the enduring popularity of DVDs as holiday gifts. Sixty-three percent said they know a DVD is a present friends and family would like, and 59 percent will be buying DVDs because they were featured on their wish lists.

Of the DVDs purchased by consumers this Christmas, 82 percent will be SD; however, 9 percent will be next-generation DVDs. The survey revealed that in 2008, HD will be embraced more aggressively than ever, with 54 percent of those questioned planning to move to HD, 39 percent of which will do so within the next six months.
