Sony products pave the HD highway

Sony’s HDC-1000 studio camera is capable of 1080i or 720P HD acquisition as well as 1080/60p HD resolution.

Sony laid down its HD Highway at NAB2005 with a long list of new products and systems that address the broadcast, post-production and 4K projection markets and high-definition production applications.

The company introduced its HDC-1000 studio and HDC-1500 portable cameras. Both cameras are capable of 1080i or 720P HD acquisition and 1080/60p HD resolution.

Both cameras leverage three, 2-megapixel 1920x1080 progressive scan CCDs, which combine native 1080/60P image acquisition with a newly developed video image processor that uses 0.11um semiconductor technology.

The 1080/60P performance of the new CCD combined with the camera's image processing algorithm permits an over-sampled 720P signal.

The cameras can be operated in a variety of shooting modes, including: 1080/59.94i, 50i, 1080/23.98p, 29.97p, 24p, 25p, and 720/59.94p, 50P. Other shared features of the studio and portable camera include:

  • Downconversion capability (SDI or VBS, with or without pull-down);
  • Dual HD-SDI outputs
  • Output to VF signals with 60Hz scanning to minimize VF flicker even in 24P mode.

Two-channel external control lines can be secured within the fiber system with RS-232C or RS-422 connections for virtual studios. SD monitors can also be used as sub monitors with these cameras.

At its NAB booth Sony also showed the HDC-1550 triax interface portable camera, and the HDLA-1500 large-lens adapter for the HDC-1500 and HDC-1550 cameras.
