Sony LCD, Pioneer Plasma, Samsung DLP Rank High

Sony’s Bravia LCD line, Pioneer’s plasma series, and Samsung’s DLP models ranked the highest, respectively, in overall satisfaction across the three technologies among owners of large-screen HD sets, according to a new report from J.D. Power and Associates.

Based on sizes among all three technologies, the Sony Bravia LCD line ranked first in the 37- to 49-inch group (the equivalent of 81.5 percent positive), followed by LG’s LCD and plasma series (79.9 percent and 79.4 percent, respectively).

Pioneer’s plasma series ranked at the top in the 50- to 65-inch HD group (84.5 percent), with the runner-up being Sony’s Bravia LCD series (83.3 percent), and LG plasma sets (81.4 percent).

The Samsung DLP series ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction—while Mitsubishi ranked highest in other DLP categories, notably for 70-inch and larger screens (see previous story).

The report gauged consumer satisfaction with large-screens in four “satisfaction” categories: ease of operation; features; picture and sound performance; and overall style and appearance.

The study also found HD large-screen owners have high levels of “repurchase intent.” That is, the percentage of owners who say they would purchase the same brand again was noteworthy (averaging over 90 percent), J.D. Powers said.
