SGI intros new midrange Linux server
The SGI Altix 350 server delivers up to 50 percent price and up to 75 percent performance advantages over proprietary UNIX SMP servers from Sun, IBM and HP, SGI claims.
Targeting the booming need for midrange technical computing, Silicon Graphics (SGI) has introduced the Altix 350, a new Intel Itanium 2 and 64-bit Linux OS-based server that it says fundamentally changes the price-performance landscape of the market.
The SGI Altix 350 server delivers up to 50 percent price and up to 75 percent performance advantages over proprietary UNIX SMP servers from Sun, IBM and HP, SGI claims. The Altix 350, which spans a broad range of scalable configurations, is built specifically for scientists, design engineers, researchers and other technical computing users.
Powered by Intel Itanium 2 processors, SGI Altix 350 is a 64-bit Linux solution for technical database servers, departmental servers and throughput clusters.
