Reidel matrix intercom offers fiber-based network backbone

Riedel's Artist S is a new intercom matrix platform, recently demonstrated at NAB, that provides advanced matrix technology for small-scale, mobile or large intercom applications. The new Artist S series is similar to the larger Artist M matrix, as it also offers a decentralized infrastructure for broadcast-quality live audio and talkback applications via a fiber-based network backbone.

The new Artist S series offers a decentralized infrastructure for broadcast-quality live audio and talkback applications via a fiber-based network backbone.

The Artist S system features a distributed architecture that is highly flexible, ensures reliability via its redundant dual fiber ring, and eliminates wiring costs by allowing decentralized systems to be built.

Matrix sizes range from 8x8 to 512x512, with stand-alone versions available for 24 and 32 intercom ports per mainframe. A hot-swappable modular construction and redundant power supplies ensure system reliability. The system includes intuitive configuration software, logic functions, the ability to connect directly to other AES equipment without sample rate converters, error management (including GPI alarms and pop-up windows), and TCP/IP data routing between frames.

The system's high degree of decentralization enables the matrix frames to be located next to the intercom stations or audio I/O reducing wiring and installation costs considerably. In mobile applications, frames can be used separately for individual events and then joined together as needed for larger productions, forming a single matrix without trunk lines.

A single Artist S mainframe features plug-in slots for the network interface controller, four 8-port client cards and a GPIO-card. The system runs 16-bit 48kHz AES audio internally and to the key-panels, allowing two independent audio channels to connect to a panel using a single cable. It also includes the ability to connect directly to external digital audio I/O without the use of AD/DA converters. Users can also sync the entire Artist system to an external digital audio reference.
