Redback Unveils Next-Gen Router for Triple Play

Redback Networks, an Ericsson company, is ramping up its third-generation multiservice edge router, the SmartEdge 1200. Redback said it has created the first one-million-subscriber rack for triple-play services: HD, HD VOD and broadband mobility.

By connecting both wired and wireless networks the firm will enable an option where any network can deliver any service to any Internet-enabled device, Redback said this week.

The next-gen router differs from its two earlier editions by doubling carrier capacity for new video upgrades, extending triple-play services to broadband mobile networks, and integrating up to a half-dozen network applications into a single router. Its new network applications include deep-packet inspection for peer-to-peer traffic management, advanced session border capabilities, and added network security.

Redback said the SmartEdge 1200 would be compatible with its earlier 400 and 800 in the SmartEdge series. (All three router platforms share a common operating system, line cards, and network software applications.)
