The Public Broadcast Service (PBS) has purchased a Miranda Kaleido-K2 “virtual” monitor wall processor for signal monitoring within a new ingest room at its with headquarters in Alexandria, Va. for media prep prior to archiving. The network has also acquired two Miranda/Oxtel Imagestore automated mixing and channel branding systems and eight serial digital DA cards.

Miranda sold the products to PBS through systems integrator Communications Engineering (CEI) of Newington, Va.
Jim Seaman, senior manager of engineering at PBS, said that as they prepare material for archiving, the Kaleido-K2 gives his operators the flexibility to change aspect ratios, modify the layout configuration with the touch of a button, and visually monitor four audio levels while working with both standard definition and high-definition material.
PBS’ new Imagestore systems will provide a simpler signal path, eliminating the need for a separate still store, keyer, audio mixer, and DVE. “The appeal of the Imagestore is that everything is combined in one system,” said Marilyn Pierce, senior engineer of digital strategy and asset management at PBS.
Miranda’s Kaleido-K2 virtual monitor wall processor provides a 1600 x 1200 pixel output for a finely detailed display with the ability to scale down to 1/16 size. The processor works well for multi-step monitoring, with simultaneous display of SDI, HD-SDI, VGA, composite, and even off-air streaming feeds. Audio can be accepted in analog, AES/EBU and embedded audio formats.
The Imagestore master control and channel branding system provides two independent keying layers. Its features include animated logos and captions, in-vision clocks, “squeeze and reveal” DVE transitions, automated character generation, and audio playout.
A large media library can store up to 4,000 full frames of video, and up to 200 minutes of digital audio. The system also includes the branding media management software and the multi-channel remote control systems required for efficient operation in large broadcast installations.
