Olympics: Thomson Providing HD Hardware for Chinese Feeds

The Olympics, the first be produced entirely in HD for broadcast rights holders by the host broadcaster (CCTV of China)—will be covered (almost literally) by hundreds of Thomson Grass Valley HD and SD cameras, along with about 30 mobile broadcast trucks outfitted with HD production equipment from Thomson Grass Valley, according to the firm.

Grass Valley, which is a business within France-based Thomson, said some of its newer product lines to be used by CCTV in Beijing include more than 100 LDK 8300 HD 3X (“Super SloMo”) cameras, along with about 15 Infinity Series digital media camcorders and Edius nonlinear editing software.

Thomson said it’s also helping CCTV with the launch of the government network’s terrestrial HD and SD (along with Thomson Elite 100 and Elite 1000 transmission systems for mobile phones) as a means of providing expanded coverage.

Thomson said also being used by CCTV are nearly 50 Kayak HD, Kalypso HD, and XtenDD HD production switchers, 18 Trinix and Concerto Series HD routers, and Encore and Jupiter routing control software.
