New Changes at ‘SportsCenter’

ESPN’s flagship program, “SportsCenter,” will debut an updated opening animation and new graphics on Monday, April 6. The date coincides with the launch of the network’s Los Angeles Production Center as the new home for the 10 p.m. PDT edition of SportsCenter.

SportsCenter debuts updated opening animation on April 6

The updated opening is designed to enhance the program with a more modern and consistent look.

“We currently have a very strong presentation, but we are evolving it with a bold, upbeat open as well as more cohesive, easier to read graphics,” said Bob Toms, ESPN vice president, product enhancements.

The new graphics include a new font, colors and layout. The biggest change is the move of the rundown—the list of upcoming stories that is used on most editions of SportsCenter—from the right side of the screen to the left. The rundown will also be inverted—the current story will now be at the bottom of the screen with upcoming stories listed above it in order.

The changes will debut with the 9 a.m. EDT edition.

ESPN’s new Los Angeles Production Center will feature three production control rooms, two master control rooms; eight craft edit suites, a music room, a voiceover room and two studios totaling more than 12,300 square feet. ESPN’s owned and operated L.A.-based radio station has already relocated to the new facility in an adjacent building. Additional ESPN content will originate from this facility over time.
