New bandwidth savings on the horizon

For IPTV service providers to compete successfully with cable TV and direct-to-home satellite operators, they need to deliver both SD and HD channels as well as traditional data and telephony services.

To do so, they must grapple with the bandwidth limitations of their existing infrastructure even as they evaluate other options offering greater bandwidth, such as fiber to the home or premises, in the future.

LSI Logic this month introduced the Domino[X] Pro media processor family that promises to relieve some of these bandwidth concerns.

LSI Logic senior director of marketing and business development for advanced video products Bob Saffari laid out the bandwidth allocation of a typical IPTV network with 24Mb/s today, and how the new processor family will impact the future.
