Netflix, Samsung partner on streaming movies to Blu-ray players

Online movie rental service Netflix and consumer electronics company Samsung Electronics America said Oct. 23 that they have partnered to give owners of certain Blu-ray players instant access to streaming movies and TV episodes via the Netflix Web site.

Owners of the Samsung BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 Blu-ray disc players will be the first to have access to the content from the Netflix Web site; however, the pair plans to include the capability in a range of home entertainment products.

The move gives owners of the BD-P2550 and BD-P2500 access to more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes from Netflix. Existing owners can upgrade to the new offering for free, the companies announced.

Instantly streaming movies and TV episodes from Netflix on the BD-P2550 and BD-P2500 is done through a wired broadband connection and a Netflix queue-based user interface. Samsung's Blu-ray players offer HD 1080p playback and feature the HQV processing chip.
