NAB plans DTV promotional campaign; Sony will participate

The NAB will launch a multimillion-dollar public service campaign later this year in an attempt to educate viewers about the upcoming DTV transition.

Jonathan Collegio, NAB vice president for the DTV transition team, said a PSA campaign in multiple languages would begin at the end of the year, reports said.

During a recent briefing of congressional staffers and reporters on transition plans, Collegio said that NAB had created a speakers bureau and that at least two staffers from each TV station would be available to speak about the transition to community groups. The NAB will book the speeches.

In the meantime, one major TV set manufacturer will begin a consumer educational campaign about the transition this fall. Stan Glasgow, president and COO of Sony Electronics, told the press that the campaign will gradually increase and become heavy by the fall of 2008. He said Sony would do its part to help underwrite the cost of educational messages.

Sony will determine what information is needed from the Consumer Electronics Association.
