MLB Advanced Media enters four-year agreement for online encoding

MLB Advanced Media has signed a four-year deal with BT Broadcast Services to acquire and encode live audio and video for all regular and post-season Major League Baseball games to be shown online at www.MLB.com.

Using BT Mediastream, BTBS will encode the baseball game coverage, which during the season will on average be video from 15 games and audio from 45 commentary feeds daily. The video and audio feeds will come in simultaneously from TV and radio stations across the country.

BTBS will encode the content at data rates of up to 350KB/s and deliver it to the Akamai content delivery network for distribution worldwide.

According to Major League Baseball, MLB.com had about 500,000 paid subscribers to MLB.com with more than 150,000 signing up for live video service last season.

MLBAM was established in June 2000 by the owners of the 30 Major League Baseball clubs to centralize all Internet operations.
