KLCS sends DTV to classrooms with help from Sundance Digital

Sundance Digital's Titan delivers a scalable automation architecture that permits dynamic re-assignment of playlist control via an intuitive, information-rich, graphical user interface.

To send content to the desktops of more than 1 million students and teachers in the Los Angeles County School District, KLCS, the district's TV station, needed an automation system that could mature along with the project itself.

After assembling an extensive set of specifications, KLCS entrusted the automation portion of the nearly $6 million project to Sundance Digital's highly scalable Titan solution.

KLCS had lofty goals. The district planned to repurpose its system several times daily. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., it planned to broadcast a DTV channel replicating its analog signal and four to 10 streaming channels to 1 million young viewers. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., it would convert to a traditional four-channel environment, and from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., it would broadcast one high-definition and one DTV channel.

From 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., KLCS planned to use its bandwidth to send content, including video, PowerPoint presentations and lesson plans, to the desktops of students and teachers. Content browsed and selected from a digitized and thumb-nailed media library was to be forwarded and cached at each school's edge server and then a hotlink for the content would be sent to the viewer's desktop.

Sundance Digital's Titan was selected for the task because it delivers a scalable automation architecture that permits dynamic re-assignment of playlist control via an intuitive, information-rich, graphical user interface. Aiding Titan is a full slate of Sundance functionality enhancements, including Seeker, a flexible digital asset management system, Sundance Archive Manager, an intelligent near-line archive solution and Intelli-Sat, to facilitate the district's recording of incoming satellite feeds for storage and eventual distribution.
