HD satellite channels to see dramatic growth by 2013

The number of HDTV channels available worldwide from satellite television services will grow 350 percent during the next five years, according to a new forecast from the Satellite Industry Association (SIA).

Last week, the SIA released its “2008 State of the Satellite Industry Report” forecasting the dramatic growth. The increase of HDTV satellite channels will follow a growth period worldwide that saw the number climb 150 percent between 2006 and May 2008.

Overall, the report shows a 16 percent growth in global revenues for the commercial satellite industry. Worldwide revenues in 2007 were $123 billion, representing an average annual growth of 11.5 percent for the period of 2002-2007.

The report also found:

  • Consumer services, both satellite TV and radio, continue to lead overall satellite services growth.
  • Ground equipment growth, particularly in the consumer equipment side, will continue to be a major driver.
  • Overall satellite manufacturing revenues remained nominally unchanged in 2007, with commercial demand growing faster than government demand.
