The FLO Forum has completed the Open Conditional Access (OpenCA) Key Management System Framework, which enables multiple vendors to implement content security systems within the FLO mobile video delivery architecture.
The OpenCA framework provides a standard interface for CA systems to interoperate, ensuring that FLO network operators do not become dependent on a particular vendor. Instead, they can replace an entire CA system seamlessly with another system, or run multiple systems concurrently in a simulcrypt-type setting. This provides for increased flexibility in response to new security demands or business model requirements. The framework also allows content providers to offer a wider choice of premium content on mobile platforms without the risk of piracy.
Primarily three members of the FLO Forum, Irdeto, Nagravision and NDS, spearheaded the OpenCA framework initiative. All contributed input via the organization’s Content and Services and Technical Committees, using their experience working with the DVB OSF to devise an equivalent solution for FLO technology. Newport Media, Verimatrix and Widevine Technologies also contributed to the review and approval of the framework.
FLO technology is an air interface with multicasting capabilities developed to increase capacity and reduce content delivery costs to mobile handsets. It was designed to multicast significant volumes of rich multimedia content, allowing wireless operators to cost-effectively deliver news, entertainment and informational programming in clips and streaming video to millions of mobile users at once.
