EAS Rule Changes Considered
At its August 4 meeting, the FCC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) seeking comment on how to improve the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and make it a more effective mechanism for warning the public of an emergency. No details on the NPRM, which had not been released as of Sunday, were covered in the FCC news release Commission Seeks Comment on Rule Changes for the Emergency Alert System.
The commission says its is acting in part from recommendations of the Media Security and Reliability Council and the Partnership for Public Warning. The Department of Homeland Security, FEMA, the Department of Commerce and the National Weather Service are participating in the proceeding. The news release seeks participation from state and local emergency planning organizations and all communications industries involved in alert and warning.
